One Basement is guaranteed to spawn on Door 61, in which it plays a key component to access The Rooms.
Overview
The Basements are randomly-generated rooms that spawn in The Hotel. They are maze-like structures with multiple gates blocking certain areas, vents that lead to other areas, and a lever that spawns on a random wall. Basements also contain wine barrels, pipes, cobwebs, meat substances, tables and Containers. Basements also have windows that display the rain outside, and an arched ceiling. To access a Basement, players must go down a stairwell, that branches from the top floor, containing a gate blocking the door to the next room. The Basement that spawns on Door 61 always spawns as a dark room, is twice the size of normal Basements, and is always guaranteed to spawn.
Function
Upon reaching the door to the Basements, the door to the next room is barricaded with a gate. There are two doors while only one give access to the basement. In there, a lever can be found somewhere that when pulled, opens the closed gate. There are also vents which players have to crouch.
In The Basement, there are multiple tables, pipes and vents. On a table, there is a 80% chance for a Smoothie to spawn. The Basement is also a major hiding spot for surviving Rush or Ambush, although Rush can still shatter the lights for it, and grants the player "In Plain Sight" Achievement. The main use is to find the lever which gives access to the next door.

Accessing The Rooms
The Basement that spawns on Door 61 plays a key role in order for players to access The Rooms.
When entering Door 61, players must go down a stairwell in order to access the Basement. The lever to proceed to the next room and to unlock the gate to the entrance of The Rooms will spawn on a random wall in the Basement. Sometimes the lever spawns close to the stairwell, making it easier for players to reach, but usually the lever will spawn far away. Once the lever has been activated, both gates will open, providing the player access to the The Rooms' entrance.
Counterparts
Courtyard Basement
The Courtyard Basement can be found within The Courtyard. It contains a trapdoor covered with vines, which require the Shears to open. Once the Shears have been used, players enter down a flight of stairs, into a room that is similar to small basements (pre-Content Update). This room will contains a large amount of Gold. Although, players must be careful of Snare, who inhabits the floor and the entrance.
Small Basements (Removed)
Before The Content Update, Basements were known as small basements, which appeared to be very similar to the current Basements. Small basements would always spawn with the exact same room generation. As of The Content Update, small basements and the large basement have been merged.
Large Basement (Removed)
Before The Content Update, Basements had a counterpart known as the large basement, which was classified as a standalone room. It spawned on Door 61, so it was always a dark room, but a major difference was that it had two stairwells instead of one. As of The Content Update, small basements and the large basement have been merged, but the large basement's mechanics have been given to the current Basement that spawns on Door 61. The large basement was added in The Hotel+ Update.
Trivia
- In the game files, Basements are referred to as "cellars", being their room name "Hotel_CellarGate1".
- Before The Content Update, they were simply referred to as "basements", being their room name "Hotel_Basement" or "Hotel_BasementFlipped".
- The Basement in Door 61 has been always named "Hotel_MegaGate".
- Generation of Basements use a numerical system. This means that the higher the number that generates a Basement, the more rooms it will spawn. Each number represents a very small diverse section of a Basement, so if the number is 10, it would theoretically spawn 10 sections or rooms in a Basement. This means that a Basement could in fact be infinitely long, making it the first infinitely-generated room. Basements, based on estimate, would commonly generate around 30-40 sections, whilst the Door 61 Basement would generate a number double that, so around 60-80.
- Before The Content Update, when the large basement was added when the Hotel+ Update initially released, the door behind the gate was automatically locked, so players needed to find a Room Key as well as the lever. This was shortly removed likely due to it being too hard and time consuming.
- Basements replaced what was an older version, pre-Hotel+ Update. Old basements originally had a simpler design. The rooms had no vents, and the layout was different.
- Basements also replaced an alternate lever gate room called Mini-Libraries, that existed pre-Hotel+ Update. Mini-Libraries were rooms that had a few bookshelves and a lever hidden somewhere within. It was removed most likely as the developers wanted to focus on the decoration and gameplay of the Basements.
- Before The Content Update, there was a rare situation where a small basement spawned the room straight after the large basement. Pulling the lever in the large basement would've also activated the gate to the small basement which followed after.
- This occurred because the lever from the large basement would've opened any gate adjacent to the room.
- Smoothies always spawn in Basements. It can be found on a random table or container. When consumed, it will heal the player by 35 health points.
- If the player waits around a minute, Guiding Light will light up the lever in order to proceed, the doors that connect Basements to the stairwells, and the door to the next room.
- The Door 61 Basement is around twice the size of a normal Basement, making it more difficult to navigate.
- The Door 61 Basement is also a dark room, meaning Screech will spawn as usual, but the likeliness for it to spawn is lower than normal dark rooms. This is due to players needing more time to locate the lever to progress.
- Curious Light's ambience can be softly heard when navigating the Door 61 Basement. This happens because the entrance to The Rooms is nearby.
- In extremely rare occasions, the music from Jeff Shop can be heard in the Door 61 Basement.
- The player can avoid Rush and Ambush if they hide in a Basement. They will also receive the 'In Plain Sight' achievement if they haven't obtained it.
- If Shadow spawns in a Basement, the entire room will be bright even if Rush goes through. This makes finding the lever much more easier.
- Eyes has a chance to spawn within a Basement, but it will spawn only on the top floor.
- Items such as Batteries, Bandages and Lighters can spawn on tables and inside Containers. Large amounts of Gold can also be found.
