Hiding is a basic mechanic which allows players to utilize specific pieces of furniture to survive from certain entities.

Overview Overview

When the player is near a hiding spot like a wardrobe or a bed, the hiding (Hiding) icon will appear. By pressing E on PC, the "hiding button" on Mobile or File:Xbox Button X.png on Xbox, it will play a short animation of the player entering the closet, or crawling underneath the bed (for The Hotel, or The Backdoor [only closet]), locker or fridge (The Rooms), or entering the lockers, crawling into sewage grates, or getting into the dumpsters. To exit a hiding spot, players will need to walk forward or press the exit button on mobile.

Wardrobes

Wardrobes are the most abundant hiding spot in The Hotel, spawning from doors 1-88. They act as a basic hiding spot that can protect you from some entities. The player hides in them by getting into the empty interior and closing the wardrobe doors. And they are a primary hiding spot, up until door number 88.

Beds

Beds are hiding spots found in The Hotel spawning from Doors 1-88 that the player can hide under. They appear to be just a normal bed with red covers white pillows. The player hides under the side they are facing. There are three variants of beds, one with one pillow hiding one person and one with two pillows hiding three people. The last bed is The Infirmary bed and is not interactable.

Toolsheds

Toolsheds or Cupboards are the closets found inside The Courtyard, The Greenhouse, and The Electrical Room. They appear pretty much like wardrobes, but in rougher shape. The player hides in them the same way as a closet.

Lockers

Lockers are the most abundant hiding spot in The Mines and protect the player from some entities. They appear to be an empty locker with two doors and a dark gray texture likely made of metal. The player hides in it the same way as a closet.

Circular Vents

Circular Vents are hiding spots in The Mines that can protect you from some entities. It appears to be a vent with a hollow pipe behind it. The player hides in it by opening the vent and climbing in.

Dumpsters

Dumpsters are hiding spots uncommonly found in The Mines. They can be found in the four-way junction and flooded rooms. The player hides in them by opening the lid and jumping in. Dumpsters can hide 2 players at once.

Toolsheds

Toolsheds or Cupboards are the only hiding spot found in two different floors. They appear pretty much like wardrobes, but in rougher shape. In The Mines, Toolsheds can be found in sinkhole rooms.

Backdoor Closet

Backdoor Closets look like the mix of Wardrobes and Toolsheds. It functions identically to wardrobe beside from the absence of Hide.

Lockers

Lockers are main hiding spot in The Rooms. They appear as a one door locker with a cubic design and have a basic animation of the camera swinging to the locker.

Fridge

The fridge is a hiding spot that only appears in one room in The Rooms. It is a recolored locker in white form, and it looks like a fridge.

Retro Closets

Retro Closets are main hiding spot in Retro Mode. They appear as a two door box with a handle and studs all over the closet. When opening the doors, they swing open. Multiple people can hide in one Retro Closet. Hide cannot appear in these closets.

Hiding Boxes

Hiding Boxes are hiding item added during the 2025 April Fools Event. It takes the appearance of a cardboard box and acts as a portable one-time use hiding spot. The item can appear in rooms and in sub-rooms when playing Ranked Mode. Hide cannot appear when using it. </tabber>

Notes

  • The only spots considered hiding spots by the game are wardrobes, beds and lockers.
    • However, it is possible to hide from Rush or Ambush without hiding by staying out of their line of sight. Doing this for the first time awards the player with the In Plain Sight achievement.
  • Once the player is inside a closet or underneath a bed, the game will consider the player hidden.
  • The game will consider the player hidden after entering a hiding spot, even if the animation has not finished playing.
  • Out of every hiding spot, Jack can only appear inside wardrobes (The Hotel) and lockers (The Mines).
  • The player was unable to hide in a closet during Seek's chase, this is due to a bug forcing the player to constantly move forwards, therefore the player will always exit any closets.
    • As of The Hotel+ Update and prior to The Content Update, the player needs to hold W to run, so the player is able to hide in a closet during a Seek Chase, if there are any at all.
      • Seek is still able to kill hiding players.
        • This may also be a reference to the phrase "You can run, but you can't hide (although the "hide" is not present)" mentioned in Seek's achievement, since the player can run to survive Seek but they can't hide from it.
  • Only one player can hide in each hiding spot. Multiple players cannot hide together.
  • Wardrobes and Lockers can not be entered from behind. Doing so will grant the player with a block symbol in their screen that flashes slowly in red and white. However, they can be entered from the sides.
    • This is not the case when playing in Hotel- Modifier.
  • In one of the rooms within The Rooms subfloor, there is a locker colored white to mimic the style of a fridge.
    • There are also a type of uninteractable locker within a room type called "Broken Lockers" which the player cannot hide in.
  • Players may hide in lockers for as long as they wish in The Rooms and The Backdoor as Hide is not present on these floors.
  • The player used to be able to hide under the beds in The Infirmary before The Hunt Update, but this feature was removed for unknown reasons.
  • Hiding time will increase if Ambush spawns. If Ambush despawns after, the hiding time will be set to default.

Bugs Bugs

  • There used to be a bug where hiding under a bed would result in the player's camera clipping through the floor. This has since been fixed.
  • There is a bug, when leaving under the bed, the camera will not have animation.
  • There is a bug where the player character's camera will move similar to walking animation, before exiting the closet.
  • If a player hides while holding a Puzzle Painting, the player's point of view will tilt awkwardly.
  • There is a bug where if the player hides under a bed behind a big sized window but on top of the bed, the animation has a chance to glitch out and make the player stuck outside.
  • There is a bug with beds, where if the player hides near the corner, exits, and during the exit animation does a "freeze tab glitch", it's possible to go through the floor, causing the player's death or Glitch to appear and teleport them. This bug is not consistent and it is hard to replicate.
  • Being in a hiding animation right when Void's teleport occurs will make the mentioned teleport fail, causing the player to fall into the void (being teleported by Glitch right after).
  • Gold used to have a big hitbox that could block raycasting from node entities, being able to survive more easily without hiding.
  • Drawers in The Backdoor and in The Mines could block raycasting from node entities, being able to survive more easily without hiding.
  • Snares used to have a hitbox that blocked raycasting big enough to make players able to survive just standing of them, although needing to step on them first once to stand in the middle safely and carefuly after, making survival more easy without needing to hide.
  • Naturally spawned items (not dropped by players) used to have a big hitbox that could block raycasting from node entities, being able to survive more easily without hiding.
  • In Ranked Mode, raycasting from node entities can be blocked just by holding a Hiding Box or a Throwable Prop, being able to survive more easily without hiding.
    • The Hiding Box is able to block ray-casting from both the front and the back of the player, but not their sides.
    • Throwable Props are able to block ray-casting only from the front of the player, being vulnerable from every other direction.
    • Being ragdolled might sometimes break the item's hitbox causing it to not block the raycasting correctly.
  • Pressing the interaction button in a hiding spot multiple times while Screech is following the player will make the message "Something is stopping you from hiding..." appear, despite being able to hide.
  • When hiding while in FLY/NOCLIP mode with the Admin Panel, your camera will move by itself rapidly.

Trivia Trivia

  • It is possible to complete a round of DOORS without interacting with any hiding spots by being out of range or sight when Rush or Ambush attacks and keeping a distance when Figure appears.
  • There is a chance that Jack will appear to block players from hiding in a wardrobe (Hotel) or a locker (Mines).
    • Jack can't spawn if the latest open room is one that Rush or Ambush spawned in.
      • If you open the next door before you hide, you have a chance of finding Jack, which is why you should try not to open the next door after Rush or Ambush spawns.
  • The animation of hiding in a closet is similar to the animation of hiding in a closet and locker from CASE: Animatronics.
  • Players were able to crawl into vents to hide in plain sight before Vent Rooms' removal.
  • Hide is not present in closets while Figure is active in The Electrical Room, so players may hide for as long as they wish.
  • Redibles has claimed to have ideas for uses for hiding under beds.[1]
    • After The Hotel+ Update, Rush and Ambush can now spawn in rooms that have beds, giving beds a use. However, if Ambush were to appear, it's recommended to hide in a closet as the bed animation takes longer than the closet animation.
      • It should be noted however, that the player is immune to the entities during the animations. However, the player is not immune to Rush nor Ambush during the exiting animation of the closet, despite being immune to other entities, such as Eyes.
  • There was initially going to be a Jack-like mechanic for beds, although it was scrapped due to LSPLASH not following through, although it may come back at a later time.[2]
  • Before The Mines Update, lockers from The Rooms used to not have an animation, this is possibly to mimic the way that a player hides in lockers in the original Rooms created by nicorocks5555.
    • In Rooms by nicorocks5555, however, to hide, the player need to sit on a 'Seat' part that is inside lockers, which will give players invulnerability to entities when sat on.
  • The hiding in closet animation opens the door to the next room if the closet is close to it.
    • The same goes with lockers in The Rooms with teleportation of player's character in the locker.
  • With The Hunt Update, camera rotation inside hiding spots has increased.
  • In Ranked Mode, every hiding sound is sped up.
