"Enjoy, future me!"
- Interconnected Achievement description
The Rift is a type of container that appears at set positions at the beginning (if an item was previously placed inside) and at the end of all floors.[1] They are used to store items for use in future runs.
The main Rift, also referred to as "Guiding Light's Rift (or Moonlight Rift)", appears as a white crack with a light blue glow and has various particles emanating from it. The other rift, named the Star Rift, but often referred to as "Curious Light's Rift (or Starlight Rift)", instead has a yellow glow and is slightly smaller.
Usage[edit | edit source]
In The Hotel, the Guiding Light's Rift can first be found by going downstairs in The Electrical Room. To store an item into it, a player must equip one and interact with the Rift, which stores it in the rift. On the next game run, the Rift will appear in The Reception, and players will be able to retrieve the item they stored in it. The Rift will not appear there if the player did not deposit an item in it.
If the Starlight Bottle is used on the Guiding Light's Rift, the Curious Light's Rift will be created. It acts exactly the same as the Guiding Light's Rift with the difference being that the Curious Rift disappears once an item is taken out of it, this also applies for swapping an Item. (It's best to use the Curious Light Rift as a Trophy Holder, keeping rare items such as the Starlight Jug)
Additionally, placing certain items inside Guiding Light's Rift will transform and upgrade them, unlocking the "Lost in Translation" achievement. Currently, only two items can undergo this transformation: the Candle becomes the Moonlight Candle, and the Smoothie turns into the Moonlight Float.
All active Rifts also appear in The Adit and The Woods, using the same functionality as the Rifts in The Reception and The Electrical Room, respectively. They will also appear on all main future floors as well.[1][2]
Notes[edit | edit source]
- Essential Items cannot be stored inside of the Rift.
- The player can only store one non-stackable item inside the Rifts. If they want to add something new, the player must grab the stored item that spawns at the start of the run inside The Reception and make it to Door 100 again. However, the player can store multiple of one stackable item, such as lockpicks or vitamins.
- However, retrieving an item from the Curious Light's Rift in any location will cause it to disappear.
- Attempting to store two of the same non-stackable item will destroy the 2nd Rift.
- Once a player starts the Figure final chase at The Electrical Room, they will no longer be able to access the Rifts in the run, as the top of the staircase leading to it will be blocked off by a metal shelf and an invisible wall.
- Putting an item inside a Rift will keep it preserved inside until the player decides to take it out, so it's suggested to put useful or rare items inside such as a Crucifix, a Skeleton Key, a Shakelight, a Starlight Vial, a second Starlight Bottle, or a Starlight Jug (the first Starlight Bottle will create the Curious Light's Rift).
- Items with charges of any kind will keep their remaining charge when placed inside the Rift.
- It is recommended that players put useful, renewable items in the rift such as a Flashlight, Shakelight, Spotlight, or Bandage Pack as they cannot be lost from durability so they won't have to replace them (unless they die mid-run and fail to put it in the Rift at the end).
- The Rift was not available in the 2023 April Fools Event. This is most likely the case to prevent players from bringing items that are exclusive to the event into the normal gameplay.
- This also applies to certain modifiers.
- The Rift in The Mines is connected to the Rift in The Hotel, so the player cannot store an item in The Hotel and then have a different one in The Mines.
- This means players can bring items exclusive to The Mines into The Hotel by placing them in the Rift in The Mines.
- It's required to beat Seek in The Dam before being able to use the Rift whereas in the Hotel the Rift can be used at any time (except in the final chase scene).

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Players aren't able to "steal" items that are preserved inside another player's Rift(s), as they cannot see other player's Rifts.
- Using a Rift to transport a new item while having a duplicate of the item in the current Rift in the player's inventory will drop the Rift item on the floor.
- The blue light behind the crucifix on the banner of the Hotel+ Update appears to be the Rift.
- The Rift was originally going to be locked behind a door which required the Skeleton Key, however it was changed in favor of making it a normally accessible feature.[3]
- Items placed in the Rift were originally going to be obtainable in the Pre-Run Shop.
- The Rift's textures IDs are: 12769758193, 12769768264, 12769803829, 12769792997 and 12769747276. It may also play the sound of the failing crucifix sound at the reception.
- There may be a future achievement for using Curious Light's Rift.
- There may be a third rift for Red Light due to the other two Architects, Guiding Light and Curious Light, having their own rifts.
- Curious Light's Rift plays Curious Light's theme while active.
- Curious Light's Rift was added because it is necessary to do "certain things" in the future.[4]
- The filenames of certain things ("StarRiftPrompt" and "StarCenter") in Curious Light's Rift imply that its name is the Star Rift.
- Prior to The Mines Update, the Rift had collisions.
- The description for Lost in Translation implies that more items will be able to be transformed later on.
- By putting a Starlight Bottle in the Rift while Curious Light's Rift already exists, it will not waste the Starlight Bottle and instead place it in the Rift.
- The Tip Jar is currently an item that can't be put in the Rift, due to Modifiers disabling it, but it had some strange properties when it could be done.
- Tip Jars in Rifts would transform into Lighters the next time they were encountered.
- Before The Mines Update, it would transform into the Evil Dollar instead. In the mentioned update, all Evil Dollars became Lighters.
- Tip Jars can only be saved in Curious Light's Rift, and not in Guiding Light's, which is very likely just a bug.
- Before The Mines Update, this wasn't the case; both Rifts could be used to save the Tip Jar.
- Tip Jars in Rifts would transform into Lighters the next time they were encountered.
- Shears in Rifts in The Hunt Update transformed into Evil Dollars, which were transformed into Lighters in The Mines Update.
Bugs[edit | edit source]
- Sometimes, when exiting The Backdoor, the Rift is not shown in The Reception.
- Reviving while any Rift is active will cause the Rift to regenerate itself causing there to be more than one Rift visually.
- When storing a Shakelight in the Rift, its png background is not fully transparent, making a square behind it visible. This problem originates from the Shakelight's inventory icon itself.
