"Your candle ran out."
- The message that is displayed once a candle runs out of fuel.

The Candle is a light source item that can be occasionally found on top of tables or desks in The Hotel. It requires an ignition source to be used.
Usage[edit | edit source]
When equipped, the candle will remain unlit until a player lights it in a fireplace or lights it with a lighter, using some durability of it (if the player prefers to use one instead of a fireplace). Once lit, it will create a small source of light around the player. The light will go out when the player stops holding the candle and will need to be lit again. Having it equipped will slowly use up the candle's fuel. Once out of fuel, it will be removed from player's inventory with a unique message being displayed ("Your candle ran out.")
The fuel of the candle is divided into 8 bars. A candle can last approximately 1 minute and 15 seconds at maximum fuel while being constantly used, and will not consume fuel when its flame is out. The candle's model in the player's hand will visibly shorten as its fuel is depleted.
If the candle is placed into the Rift, it will transmute into a Moonlight Candle, granting the "Lost In Translation" achievement.
Notes[edit | edit source]
- The candle can spawn as early as The Reception, which can be easily rifted into the Moonlight Candle.
- Candles cannot be unlit unless unequipped. Unequipping a candle will require the player to relight it.
- The Candle's fuel cannot be replenished. The only way to get more fuel is to replace it with a different candle, or transforming it into a Moonlight Candle (the process of transformation replenishes the fuel).

Pros and Cons Pros and Cons
Pros[edit | edit source]
- Large radius.
- Great for multiplayer runs.
- Has a good amount of fuel durability.
- Usually has a good amount of fuel once picked up for the first time.
- It's relatively easy to be found early within in a run.
- Can be reignited by using a fireplace in The Hotel and by using flaming barrel in The Mines without the use of Lighter.
- Works in The Rooms, unlike the Moonlight Candle.
- Can be turned into the Moonlight Candle when put in Moonlight Rift.
- Multiple candles can be found in a single run, even though they are rare. (However, it becomes more common to spawn early multiple times on multiplayer runs).
- Can be useful in dark rooms.
Cons[edit | edit source]
- Can have a fuel time around 50% when found on table, which is very low and usually not worth to keep in the inventory.
- Cannot be used and will lose fuel when in underwater or when under the "wet" status effect.
- Exclusive to the tables in The Hotel, cannot be found in Shops.
- Attracts Gloombats.
- It will be removed from the inventory when it runs out of fuel.
- When re-equipping it, it is necessary to re-light it.
Bugs[edit | edit source]
- A candle can sometimes overlap with a globe or the Green Herb. This makes the item impossible to grab.
- The candle icon had both 3 and 4 subdivisions. This was only a visual bug.
- Although a lighter in use explodes the player in a Firedamp Leak, a lit candle won't.[1] A video of a player igniting the Candle in a room containing Firedamp</ref> (Either this is a bug, or it is something related to Guiding Light)
- There used to be a bug where the candle never went out when Rush approached, this has been patched as the candle has been reworked and the function has been given to another item.
- Even if a fireplace is out, it can still be used to light a candle.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- At the 6th daily teaser, Doors officially announced that the candle's durability will lasts 10 times longer (12 and 30s mins) and is guaranteed to spawned in Door 1 in the next update.
- The durability revamp also applies to the Moonlight candle, with infinite durability in the next update.
- The cup part that holds the Candle is a small cup that used to be in drawers before The Hotel+ Update.
- The Candle is the only light source to have a message when it runs out of fuel unlike the Lighter and Flashlight. When it runs out, it displays the message "Your Candle ran out".
- Originally, the Candle was able to detect entities in its normal state. After The Mines Update, this functionality was given to the Moonlight Candle, which is only obtainable through placing a Candle in Guiding Light's Rift.
- After The Mines Update, The Candle has its durability increased from 120 seconds to 150 seconds. It does not detect entities anymore, but its radius got increased.
- The Candle is the first item in the game that can be transformed in the Rift, the second being the Smoothie.
- It is possible to find 2 candles in one run, but it's extremely rare.
- Before The Content Update, when trying to swap 2 full candles, the game said 300/300 instead of the normal light-source-swap icon, which showed the durability bar comparison.
- The same happens with the Moonlight Candle.
- If you have the Curious Rift and find a Candle before The Reception despawns, it is advised to insert the Candle in the Guiding Light Rift to turn it into a Moonlight Candle.
- In the next update, it is planned for the Candle to last 10 times longer,[2] although it is very likely it won't get that much extra durability.[3]
- The team has also shown interest in making the Candle guaranteed to spawn in Door 1[2] but this is very likely also being changed, making it spawn around Door 10 always now, as it would be too overpowered because of the rift in the same room.[4]
