"May break at any time"
- Pre-Run Shop

Lockpicks are a tool that can be either found in containers or bought at the Pre-Run Shop and the Jeff Shop.

Usage Usage

This tool can be used to unlock doors that require a room key and the entrance to The Rooms. Players cannot use a lockpick on gates, The Library doors, or skeleton doors, and must unlock those doors using other mechanics. Players can also use a lockpick to unlock locked chests, lockers, and toolboxes. Players can use a lockpick as a replacement for fuses inside the generators.

Notes

  • It is recommended to use lockpicks in situations where finding the room key is difficult, such as dark rooms, rooms with multiple sub-rooms, and the combination of the two.
    • This is very useful if a player is speedrunning, as it can save them time that would normally be spent searching for keys.
    • Using a lockpick while in a locked dark room may reduce the chance of a Screech encounter, as less time is spent in the dark room.
    • However, unless a player's goal is to speedrun the game, it is also recommended to only use lockpicks on locked chests or the Circuit Breaker Room door in The Electrical Room.
  • Lockpicks can be used on The Electrical Room door as an alternative to the Electrical Room Key even without opening the gate.
    • Additionally, players can flee into the Circuit Breaker Room once Figure starts chasing, as it would pass the room and continue searching around the area before the Circuit Breaker Room.
    • Lockpicks could not be used on the Circuit Breaker Room door before the Hotel+ update.
  • Should all active players have a light source, lockpicks or vitamins will start spawning instead of light sources.
    • This was changed after The Hunt: First edition update. Now only one player needs a light source for them to start spawning.
  • Two lockpicks (and a Skeleton Key) are required to enter The Rooms.
  • Using math, one lockpick costs 25 knobs.
  • Even though the pre-run shop states that it ''May break at any time", the Lockpick does not break in-game, only when used.
    • Although, this could be referring to how any lock may be broken at any time with the Lockpick.

Bugs Bugs

  • Before The Mines Update, there used to be a bug where if a player picked up a lockpick, it would glitch. The "glitched lockpick" could be infinitely used. This bug started happening in The Hunt Update. [1]
    • The lockpick unbugged if a player unequipped this lockpick. Using closets and beds also count as unequipping.
    • This "bugged lockpick" wouldn't have any animation, unlike the normal one.
    • If a player already had a lockpick in their inventory, and they got a lockpick, it wouldn't bug. A player had to have no lockpicks to be able to get a "bugged lockpick".

Pros and Cons Pros and Cons

Positive Pros

  • Maximum of 3 lockpicks per player.
  • Can open locked chests and lockers.
  • Can be used to enter The Rooms by using 2 lockpicks and skeleton key.
  • Can open the breaker room without using the elevator key.
  • Mostly uncommon in The Hotel.
  • Cheap at Pre-Run shop and Jeff Shop.
  • Can be used as a substitute for fuses when used on a generator.

Negative Cons

  • Doesn't excel as much once players are in the last doors of The Hotel.
  • Cannot open the Library's lock & Skeleton Doors.
  • More expensive in SUPER HARD MODE!!!.

Trivia Trivia

  • The pre-run shop description implies that the lockpicks can break at any moment, so they are very breakable, explaining their single use.
    • This also suggests that they might be really old and/or affected by corrosion.
  • One lockpick would be worth 25 knobs in the Pre-Run Shop.
  • Prior to the content update, lockpicks could not be found in The Mines.
  • Lockpicks can be obtained trading with Louie certain items.
  • The price of Lockpicks in the Jeff Shop used to be Gold50 before the SUPER HARD MODE!!! update, and Gold150 before The Modifiers Update
