Modifiers are a post-game feature added on the 26th of August, 2023 as its own standalone update for the game's first year celebration. This feature allows players to modify their game room with bonuses or penalties, yielding varying multipliers of knobs. The modifiers update also brought along 2 achievements with it.

Overview Overview

Modifiers are unlockable small, varied changes that can potentially change a run drastically, especially when paired up with other modifiers. They are only available to players with the Rock Bottom achievement, with more modifiers being available if a player has certain other achievements. Most modifiers make the game harder, but each of them adds different multipliers of knobs depending on their difficulty. modifiers that conflict with each other cannot be activated at the same time. Players without the Rock Bottom achievement may still be able to join elevators with modifiers created by others; however if the elevator has any good modifiers, you will not be able to join or you wont be able to get Rock Bottom.

The color of the modifiers are different, and generally correlate with their difficulty; green modifiers make the game easier, orange/blue/purple modifiers make it difficult, and red modifiers make it much harder.

Notes

  • The entrance to The Rooms will be blocked off if any modifiers are active.
  • Once the player turns on enough modifiers for at least +150% bonus Knobs, all other modifiers that add extra Knobs are halved, rounded up where possible. (e.g. 5% -> 3%, 10% -> 5%, 15% -> 8% etc.)
    • However, the maximum penalty for modifiers is a total -90% Knobs penalty and the game will refuse to penalize more even if the modifiers' original penalty is more than 90%. This is to prevent players from earning negative Knobs. (This limit only affects the total Knob bonus, so removing good modifiers or adding hard modifiers will reduce the original penalty and possibly reduce it to less than 90%.)
  • The candle will go out if A-60 or A-120 are approaching, but the crucifix will have no effect.
  • The Guiding Light is not present on the Death Screen if any modifiers are active (because the player has achieved Rock Bottom before and is likely experienced enough to not require an explanation for their death).
  • Players will not take damage from Snare if the "Last Breath" modifier is applied, unless the "I Love Pancakes!!!" modifier is applied as well.
    • A similar quirk occurs with Timothy, as it can only be fatal if the "Itchy" modifier applied.
  • If the "Wrong Number" or "Battle of Wits" modifiers, are applied with the "Lights Out" modifier, "Lights Out" overrides them, as Dupe can’t attack in Dark Rooms.
    • Dupe can spawn in Dark Locked Rooms, so the “Key Key Key Key” modifier makes Dupe able to attack again.
  • If the "Last Breath" modifier is applied with the Injuries modifier, the Injuries modifier doesn’t properly activate, as all damage is fatal.
    • However, if paired with the 'Tripped' or 'Tripped and Fell' modifiers, the Injuries modifier may instantly activate and slow the player down at the start of the game.
  • If the "Roundabout" modifier is applied, Halt can spawn as early as Door 2, although unlikely.
  • If the "Rush Hour" or "Bad Time" or a higher modifier is applied, Rush may attack anytime, not limited to after a door is recently opened.
    • Theoretically, this would make it possible to encounter Void in a singleplayer game (besides the bug with Halt), although in practice it is difficult and unlikely due to locked doors stopping Rush from opening more doors.
  • If any of modifiers that increase speed are applied, Figure will be able to hear players even while crouching.
    • This suggests that since Figure’s hearing is based on noise, then the players make more noise the faster they move.
    • Depending on the situation and speed boost by the modifier, players may be able to outrun Figure if they do not crouch, which would be more advisable as crouching no longer has a good advantage.
  • Jack, Shadow, Window, Bob, Jeff, Curious Light and Glitch are the only entities so far don’t have any modifiers named after or relating to them in any way.
  • If the “Stop Right There” or “Room For More” modifiers are applied, Snare, Screech, Hide and Dupe will trigger A-90 if they attack while A-90 is on screen. This is because A-90 is triggered by both player and external movements. (This may cause the player's death depending on their health and the entity that triggered A-90.)
  • The “El Goblino On Break”, “El Goblino Was Here” and higher modifiers are the only modifiers that do not alter the entity mentioned in their name.
  • Some entities that aren't encountered often didn’t get a modifier. (e.g. Jack)
  • The “Electrical Work” modifier has the hidden benefit of preventing Rush and Ambush from breaking the lights after passing through, thus making it easier for the player to navigate to the next room. It also prevents the lights from breaking as players approach The Library.
  • If any modifiers have "RIFT DISABLED", the Rift in The Reception and The Electrical Room are still visible, however, items can not be inserted or taken out.
    • Trying to insert or take an item out from the Rift while some modifiers have "RIFT DISABLED" will give players the message "A currently activated modifier disabled the Rift."
  • Dying in a run with a "NO PROGRESS" modifier does not increase the death counter and does not grant achievements. [1]

Bugs

  • The "Locked and Loaded" and "Key Key Key Key" modifiers will sometimes spawn a key above a door, making it impossible to get and potentially stopping further progress. However, the player can still use lockpicks or the Skeleton Key to open the door.
  • The Electrical Room does not turn off all lights with "Lights Out" modifier.
    • If Rush or Ambush enters Room 100, the lights will not break.

Trivia Trivia

  • Many of the modifier names are references: [2]
    • "Uh Oh" and "How Unfortunate" are a reference to Dee Dee's voice lines from FNaF Ultimate Custom Night.
    • "My Knees Are Killing Me" is a reference to a voice line said by Brimstone from Valorant.
    • "Lights On" could be a reference to the Daycare Attendant in FNAF: Security Breach, where he asks the player to "Keep the lights on."
    • "Chaos, Chaos" is a reference to Jevil's voice lines from Deltarune Chapter 1.
    • "Bad Time" is a reference to one of Sans's lines from Undertale, where he says if the player doesn't stop killing, they're "gonna have a bad time."
      • "Last Breath" could be a reference to an Undertale fan-game Undertale: Last Breath.
    • "Think Fast" and "Think Faster" could be a reference to the Team Fortress 2 meme "Think fast, chuckle-nuts"
    • "Faster, Faster, Faster" is a reference to Octane from Overwatch. [3]
    • "MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE" is a reference to Spongebob Squarepants, where Plankton uses it to speed up his vehicle to threaten Mr. Krabs.
      • "Battle Of Wits" could also be a reference to Spongebob Squarepants, where Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy play a game of checkers against each other, thus "locked in a "Battle Of Wits."
    • "Are Those Pancakes?!" and "I Love Pancakes!!!" could be a reference to Oneshot, where the main character Niko's favorite food is pancakes.
    • "Key Key Key Key" is a reference to LankyBox's song: "ULTIMATE ROBLOX PIGGY SONG"
    • "Seeing Double" might be a reference to one of the achievement in Spooky's Jumpscares Mansion which have an achievement of the same name.
      • The name "Seeing Double" itself is a reference to Diplopia, a medical condition where one sees a double of an object whilst looking at it, hence "seeing double."
      • "Four Eyes" is a derogatory term for someone who wears glasses.
    • "Stop Right There" may be a reference to the meme "Stop right there, criminal scum."
  • Other modifiers are named after achievements:
    • "I'm Runnin' Here" and "I'm Tip-Toein' Here" are references to Rush's achievement "Out Of My Way", description being "I'm walkin' here!"
    • "Back For Seconds" is a reference to Ambush's achievement "Rebound", description being "Coming back for seconds!"
    • "Rent's Due" is a reference to Hide's achievement, Eviction Notice, because of them both sharing the landlord theme.
    • "You Really Can Run" is a reference to Seek's achievement "You Can Run", as both of the names are very similar.
    • "My Legs Are Killing Me" is likely a reference to the achievement for getting A-1000, description being "I can't feel my legs."
  • The Jammin' modifer's behavior is just like Borderlands's Bane Gun, as muting the volume won't affect the music for Jammin', just like how muting the volume won't effect the Bane Gun's voice module.
  • Currently, the highest possible knob bonus from modifiers is 275%.
    • It would be extremely hard to beat the game with a max knob bonus though, being very close to impossible.
