"You died to Dread... Try not to stall. Keep moving!"
- Guiding Light

Dread is a supporting hostile entity of DOORS, appearing in the Hotel. It will attack players once 1 hour has passed in-game, and Door 13 has been opened, but Door 14 has not.

Overview Appearance

Dread appears as a white and light-blue "face" possessing many black holes. The holes on the top of its face appear to be eye sockets, and the holes on the bottom of its face appear to be several mouths containing teeth. Wispy black-gray tentacles protrude from all sides of its face.

Behavior Behavior

After the in-game clock reaches midnight (1 hour in-game), if Door 13 has been opened, Dread will spawn, causing player's screens to darken and exhibit a monotone tint. It will slowly chase players while remaining scarcely visible.

If Dread reaches a player, it will immobilize, jumpscare, and then kill them. However, if Door 14 is opened (via a player or an entity) Dread will despawn immediately, and will not appear for the rest of the run.

Notes

  • If players pass Door 14 before the in-game clock reaches midnight, Dread will not be able to spawn during that run.
  • Players can keep track of time during their run by reading the Grandfather Clocks and Wall Clocks throughout the Hotel.
  • Dread cannot kill players while they are hiding. However, it will wait in front of their hiding spot, and will kill them when they exit it, or are pushed out of it by Hide.
  • Players can crucify Dread by using a crucifix.
    • Players are not granted any achievement upon crucifying Dread.
  • Dread's behavior is similar to Haste's.
  • Dread is client-sided: when it spawns, each player will see a different Dread.

Trivia

  • Dread was originally teased in a sneak-peak for the Hotel+ Update.[citation needed]
  • A seemingly scrapped "Dead of Night" badge, which was seen in a sneak-peak, is theorized to be related to Dread.
    • This achievement may return due to the fact that Dread is now in-game.
    • There used to be plans to also add an achievement obtainable by crucifying Dread with the Crucifix, but however, it has been scrapped due to it being almost impossible to do without the rift.
  • Before being teased, Dread was originally an anticheat entity which would instantly kill players who exploited.[citation needed]
    • This concept was replaced with an anti-cheat version of Ambush.
  • Theoretically, players can indefinitely be chased by Dread.
    • The music that plays while Dread chases players only lasts for roughly 2 minutes; it doesn't loop. If Dread is still chasing the player after this, no music will play.
  • Redibles has teased that Dread will become a full-on entity in the future, and not just an easter egg entity.
  • LSPLASH said that they wanted to release Dread as soon as possible.[citation needed]
  • Rush, Ambush and Eyes can also spawn at the same time Dread does. Screech can also spawn when Dread is present.
    • If Rush also spawns in door 13, the flicker normally won't be visible or listenable, as Dread makes every room dark when it spawns.
    • Also, it will be harder to hear Screech, since Dread decreases the volume of most other sounds when it is active.
