Dupe is a supporting hostile entity of DOORS, appearing as in the Hotel Floor and appears in rooms with two or more numbered doors, typically in larger rooms.
Appearance
Dupe appears as a disembodied, reddish-white face with a large, toothy smile with bloody teeth and a pair of bloodshot eyes. Both its smile and eyes glow in the dark. Although it is heavily implied that Dupe has a body, (as demonstrated by the DOORS Hotel+ game icon and badge icon) it has technically not been confirmed.
Behavior
Dupe can have the chance to spawn in a room with multiple doorways. One of the doors that is spawned is real, while the rest are fake. There can be one or two fake doors, and each fake door is marked with an incorrect number. For example, assume the previous door is labelled as door 24, meaning the player is in room 24, indicating that the player should then progress to door 25. In this case, the Dupe door could spawn as either a door labeled as 24 or a door labeled as 26 (or even both).
After a certain time period of entering a room that Dupe has spawned in, it will liquify all other door numbers prior to the current room the player is in. This will render the door numbers unreadable, and the player will have to use other methods to figure out the fake doors. The time until the door numbers scramble shortens after Door 50. If the player does not enter the correct door (and instead enters one of the Dupe doors), the player will be attacked by Dupe, and 40 points of damage will be dealt to them. Once Dupe grabs a player, it will knock them to the floor and slam the door, throwing the fake number plate off of it. Once this happens, that door can no longer be opened.
Notes
- If the player forgets the next door's number, Dupe doors make a soft rumbling noise when near that allows someone to differentiate them from normal doors. The player can listen to this by going near the door.
- Said rumbling noise is significantly louder in dark rooms, including ones when the lights have been broken.
- There is also another strategy, where the Player can get close to a door to see if it opens or not. Fake doors need to be approached in a much closer vicinity than that of real doors in order to be triggered.
- Yet another strategy is to listen for rain ambience or fire from behind the door. If there is a noise from another room that is playing behind the door, it is more than likely the correct door.
- In locked rooms, all a player needs to do is to look at the room key, as the key will say the correct door number on its tag.
- The key won't have the next door's number while you are holding it.
- Dupe doors may also have locks on them, provided that the room it spawns in has a room key.
- Using a Room Key, a Lockpick, or the Skeleton Key on a Dupe door will not discard it from your inventory.
- Dupe will still jumpscare you after attempting to open a locked door, even if you do not possess the key.
- Dupe can still spawn during Seek's crescendo; however, it will not appear during the chase itself.
- Dupe can spawn in dark rooms.
- In this case, however, the number label has a chance of falling off when approached by the player, giving away the fact that it is a duped door.
- When Guiding Light highlights fake doors in the dark rooms, the lights of those doors will be dimmer than that of the real door's light.
- The number will be erased on all previous doors to the room with Dupe.
- Dupe cannot spawn in any room that has only one door, including but not limited to the Library, Jeff's Shop, The Infirmary or The Greenhouse.
- When a Candle is being held near the fake door, it will not extinguish its fire, unlike what is shown in the Hotel+ game icon.
- Dupe can spawn with its fake door label already on the ground, making it obvious that it is a Dupe door.
- It is possible for two fake doors to share the same number, which should be a giveaway on which door is the correct one.
- If a player is behind their teammates in a multiplayer match, the previous door can briefly display its room number before becoming scrambled.
- If Rush or Ambush spawns in a room with Dupe, they will always pass through the correct door, while also revealing the fake doors by knocking their number plates to the ground.
- Furthermore, if a player is jumpscared by Dupe whilst Rush or Ambush is approaching, they may be also jumpscared by said entities simultaneously.
- If Dupe is behind a fake door in the room preceding The Library, Dupe has a chance to create a fake door with the number 50 on it. In that case, it is obvious that this is the fake door because the real door 50 will always look different compared to other doors, while Dupe's door 50 looks like a normal door.
- The T-shaped locked hallway, with a blocked middle, will always have the fake door on the other side of to entrance. The real door was always placed at the end of the other hall from the turn.(That room is not the one with the falling bookshelves)
- Dupe usually spawns after door 10.
- In the game, Dupe appears usually in later rooms, when encountered in earlier rooms, the room will likely be a treasure room or a blocked door instead.
Bugs
- Sometimes the fake door tag will be on the ground without entering the duped room.
- Occasionally, when being attacked by Dupe, the animation can freeze in place, whereas the audio of the jumpscare will continue to play.
- If Rush enters the The Dining Room or the Basement, and opens the next door, if it is a room with Dupe, and the player(s) have not completed the puzzle, the door number may be scrambled without the player entering the room, especially after Door 50. This glitch can be fatal.
- On rare occasions, Dupe (or other non-lethal entities like Screech) may kill the player, even with full health.
- In certain rooms when a Dupe door is next to a normal door, a black box (the box used to simulate darkness within the Dupe door) may appear in the next room.
- A player can trigger the jumpscare event when the black box appears if they position themselves into a certain area of the black box behind Dupe. This will teleport you to the front of Dupe's door once Dupe's attack is complete.
- If you time entering the wrong room right when Rush arrives in the room, it won't kill you.
- This is due to invincibility frames during Dupe's attack; however, this bug is not advisable to perform.
Trivia
- Dupe was teased in the corner of LSPLASH's official Twitter profile picture. It can be seen by opening the profile picture as a file.
- Dupe might be named after the fact that it tricks players into opening the door they are in, or duping them.
- Dupe is one of the two entities to be seen in the game icon, with the other being Seek. It is currently present on the icon of DOORS since April 9th, 2023.
- Dupe was previously present on the Hotel+ Update icon (since January 28th, 2023), before being replaced by the April Fools icon for a week (April 1st, 2023).
- In the "April Fools" Update, Dupe got replaced by a Subspace Tripmine, an obvious reference to a Roblox gear with the same name, infamous among the ROBLOX community for its loud sound and its sheer power.
- By standing beside a duped door, you will hear its soft rumble.
- When the Crucifix is used on Dupe, it halts its attack and closes the door. The player will then hear a scream, and blue light can be seen coming from under and on the edges of the door. After this sequence is complete, the label of the fake door will fall to the ground.
- Dupe is one of the two entities you cannot see being Crucified, with the other one being Void.
- This is also the only entity that has the Crucifix used differently on it. In this case, the player will instead toss the Crucifix into the room with Dupe before closing the door, rather than having it levitate out of their hand.
- This is most likely done to prevent the player from seeing Dupe's entire body.
- As long as players remember the correct door number, it is very possible to complete a successful run without being jumpscared by Dupe.
- It is possible to continue staring at the previous door number even when Dupe has spawned, however, the number will eventually be replaced with the scrambled texture.
- Dupe's duped doors cannot attack you in dark rooms, instead the room number tag will fall off so players do not get randomly attacked whilst not being able to see. However, it will stop doing this after door 50.
- Dupe is one of the two entities (the other being Snare) that forcibly stops players in the game.
- It is one of the two entities in the game that is only implied to have a body, with the other being Hide.
- It is implied that Dupe has a body due to Dupe having hands in the Hotel+ thumbnail and it's "Wrong Room" achievement.
- Ghostly_Wowzers has a special dislike for Dupe, finding it annoying.[1]
